Real patients, real stories: A Period That Lasted for Months

Real patients, real stories: A Period That Lasted for Months

“I thought it would stop on its own.”

That was what she told herself when her period first became longer than usual. But weeks after weeks, months after months, and the spotting never fully stopped. By the time she came to see us, she had been bleeding almost every day for three months.

She was at her mid-30s, working long hours as she just promoted to a new role with increased job scope. Always started her day with rush, skipped breakfast, meals were irregular, and sleep late often.

Six months earlier, her menstrual cycle had always been regular. Suddenly, her period began lasting more than 14 days each cycle, followed by continuous spotting. During her periods, the bleeding was heavy, often accompanied by large, dark clots. She also noticed breast tenderness and headaches before and during her cycle.

Physically, she appeared pale, with darker-toned lips. During our consultation, she also mentioned a dry cough that had persisted for over two months. It affected her work performance as her work required frequent speaking.

Medical investigations later revealed a 4.5cm fibroid and two ovarian cysts measuring around 1cm. She felt anxious and worried, especially as the bleeding showed no signs of stopping.

From a TCM perspective, all these symptoms were not isolated.

Her OTs, emotional stress, and irregular meals had gradually disrupted the smooth flow of Liver qi, while weakening her Spleen qi, which plays a key role in digestion and blood production. When the Liver qi does not flow smoothly, circulation slows down. Over time, this affects how blood moves through the uterus, leading to stagnation.

This was why her menstrual blood appeared dark and clotted, and why the bleeding was difficult to stop. The Spleen qi deficiency further weakened her body’s ability to regulate and hold blood properly, resulting in prolonged bleeding and daily spotting.

The persistent dry cough she experienced was also linked to this imbalance. Prolonged stress and overuse of the voice can affect the Lung system, but when the Spleen is weak, the body’s overall nourishment and fluid distribution are also compromised. This explained why her cough lingered for months.

Based on her condition, we focused on a treatment plan that addressed both the root cause and the symptoms. She was prescribed personalised herbal medicine twice daily to regulate Liver qi, strengthen Spleen qi, and improve blood circulation. At the same time, we do regular uterus care treatments to support pelvic circulation and help the body restore balance.

After two weeks, her daily spotting stopped. We then continued uterus care treatments on a weekly basis. Her next period arrived on time and lasted seven days, with a normal flow and no large clots. She is now feeling more stable emotionally, less fatigued, and no longer experienced significant discomfort during her cycle. Her dry cough also resolved as her overall balance improved.
