Phlegm-Dampness: The Body Condition That Affects Your Face More Than You Think

Phlegm-Dampness: The Body Condition That Affects Your Face More Than You Think

You might be eating quite clean, sleeping okay, but your face still looks… puffy, dull, or tired.

The eyebags don’t really go away. Skin feels heavier, breakouts keep coming back, and weight is harder to control than before.

In TCM, these signs are not random. They often point to an internal body condition — one of the most common being phlegm-dampness.

Why this happens

When the body’s ability to transform and transport fluids becomes weak, excess fluid starts to accumulate internally and turns into a thick, sticky substance known in TCM as phlegm-dampness.

This condition is not only related to the Spleen, but also involves the Lungs and Kidneys, which help regulate fluid metabolism in the body.

When these systems are not functioning efficiently, circulation slows down and metabolism becomes sluggish. Over time, this leads to stagnation and that’s when symptoms start to show, both internally and externally.

People with phlegm-dampness often feel heavy, lethargic, and may notice swelling in the face or limbs, reduced appetite, slower digestion, and gradual weight gain.

Common beauty-related signs

Phlegm-dampness often reflects quite clearly on your appearance:

  • Dull or slightly yellowish complexion
  • Persistent eyebags

  • Puffiness or facial swelling
  • Acne, clogged pores, or deeper nodules under the skin
  • Easy weight gain with a soft, “puffy” body type
  • Stubborn abdominal fat
  • Sticky sweat with stronger body odour

Common health conditions associated with phlegm-dampness

If left unaddressed, phlegm-dampness may be linked to:

  • Obesity

  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Cardiovascular conditions
  • Allergies
  • Cysts and fibroids

Small habits that help improve phlegm-dampness

1. Eat more foods that help reduce dampness

Include foods like millet, barley, mung beans, Chinese yam, lion’s mane mushroom, tofu, poria, cornsilk, tangerine peel, and lotus seed.

These support digestion and help the body gradually clear dampness while strengthening the digestive system.

2. Reduce cold and raw foods

Cold and raw foods can weaken digestion over time. When food is not properly processed, it may contribute to the formation of dampness and phlegm in the body.

3. Eat according to the TCM body's clock

According to TCM body clock, 7am-9am is Stomach meridian time while 9am to 11am is Spleen meridian time. The food is transformed and digested most efficiently during these period of time. So, don’t skip your breakfast! Do not eat during late nights as the food is not fully digested and will turn into dampness.

4. Get 15–30 minutes of sunlight daily

Daily sunlight helps improve circulation and supports the body’s ability to break down stagnation. It also supports Vitamin D production and helps regulate your sleep cycle.

How TCM helps

1. Acupuncture

Acupuncture helps regulate the internal organs involved in fluid metabolism, especially the Spleen, Stomach, Lungs, and Kidneys.

It can also calm the nervous system and shift the body into a “rest and digest” state, which improves digestion and supports the natural clearing of phlegm-dampness.

Over time, this helps improve metabolism and overall energy balance.

2. Facial acupuncture

Facial acupuncture stimulates circulation and the body’s natural repair processes.

It helps improve skin radiance, support collagen production, reduce puffiness through lymphatic drainage, and calm inflammation linked to acne.

3. Herbal medication

Herbal prescriptions are customised based on your body condition.

Some focus on transforming dampness, some strengthen digestion, while others help regulate fluid balance.

Common herbs used include poria, astragalus root, Chinese yam, tangerine peel, and atractylodes rhizome.

4. Facial Bojin or Gua Sha

Facial Bojin or Gua Sha helps improve circulation and lymphatic flow in the face.

It can reduce puffiness, release muscle tension, and support a brighter, more lifted appearance over time.

Many people focus only on skincare when dealing with puffiness, acne, or dull complexion.

But in TCM, these are often signs of what is happening internally.

When phlegm-dampness accumulates, it doesn’t just affect how you feel, it also shows on your face, your skin, and your overall appearance.

Addressing the root cause by improving internal balance is what creates longer-lasting, more natural results.

If you notice several of these signs, your body may be showing early signs of phlegm-dampness.

In the next articles, we’ll be sharing other common body conditions and how each one affects your beauty and health in different ways.
