The most common reason I see for dull complexion, recurring pigmentation and loss of firmness has nothing to do with skincare.
It has to do with circulation. With the health of the uterus. With whether the body has enough Qi and Blood to nourish itself properly.
Skincare works on the surface. But if the internal picture is not right, the results will always be temporary.
Understanding the connection
Why your uterus affects how you look
Think of it this way. When a plant is not getting enough water and nutrients from the roots, the leaves turn yellow and dull. You can polish the leaves all you want — it does not help. The problem is at the root.
In TCM, the uterus and the meridians connected to it are part of that root system for a woman's body. The uterus, known as the Bao Gong, is closely related to the Chong and Ren meridians. The Chong Meridian governs Blood, while the Ren Meridian plays a central role in women's reproductive health. Together with the Liver, Kidney and Spleen systems, they govern the circulation and nourishment that feed every part of a woman's body, including her face.
"When circulation is smooth and the body is well nourished,
a woman naturally looks more radiant."
This is why at Xin Le TCM in Mont Kiara, KL, we do not always focus on the face when addressing dull skin, pigmentation or loss of firmness. We look at the menstrual cycle, digestion, sleep, stress and overall circulation. The skin is reflecting something deeper.
What skincare addresses
The surface
Hydration and barrier function
Temporary brightening and firming
Results that reverse when you stop
Does not change what the skin is reflecting
What TCM addresses
What the skin is reflecting
Qi and Blood circulation throughout the body
Internal warmth and nourishment
The organ systems behind the complexion
Radiance that comes from within and stays
What TCM reads in the skin
Three skin concerns that often have an internal root
Sign 01
Dull or yellowish complexion
In TCM, when cold and stagnation affect the lower abdomen, Qi and Blood flow is disrupted. The face loses its radiance because circulation is not reaching it properly.
Sign 02
Recurring pigmentation
Pigmentation that keeps coming back after treatment is often a sign of blood stasis or Liver Qi stagnation. Clearing the stasis and moving the Liver Qi internally is what prevents it from returning.
Sign 03
Looking tired and less firm
Long-term fatigue, poor sleep and stress deplete Qi and Blood. When the body is not adequately nourished, the face is usually the first place it shows.
Sign 04
Pale or washed-out skin tone
A consistently pale complexion, especially alongside cold hands and feet and fatigue, often points to Qi and Blood deficiency — the body does not have enough to nourish both itself and the skin.
Your skin is not ageing independently. It is responding to everything happening inside.

Why it happens
Three everyday habits that quietly affect your skin
For many modern women in KL, these issues build gradually from daily habits that seem harmless until they are not. Long hours in the office, strong aircon everywhere, late nights and food on the go all contribute more than most people realise.
Habit 01
Too much cold
Iced drinks, cold and raw food, long hours in strong aircon. From a TCM perspective, excessive cold and raw food weakens the Spleen and affects Yang energy and circulation, particularly in women already prone to feeling cold or experiencing menstrual discomfort.
Habit 02
Sitting for too long
Hours at a desk followed by hours on the phone. Long periods of inactivity reduce circulation to the lower abdomen and pelvis — and what does not circulate well eventually shows on the face.
Habit 03
Late nights and stress
In TCM, the Liver and Kidney systems are closely linked to Blood, Essence and women's reproductive health. Long-term sleep deprivation and emotional stress deplete these systems. The skin is where you see it first.
Your skin needs rest. But so does your whole body.
What you can do
Gentle ways to support your body at home
You do not need complicated routines or excessive supplementation. The goal is to support circulation, nourishment and overall balance through simple habits maintained consistently.
External care
Warm the lower abdomen
Gently massage your lower abdomen and lower back for around five minutes when you have free time. Massage until the area feels comfortably warm. The purpose is to encourage relaxation and circulation, not apply pressure.
Movement
Move regularly
You do not need intense exercise. A brisk walk after sitting for several hours, gentle stretching, or simply getting up and moving regularly helps keep circulation flowing and prevents stagnation from building.
Internal nourishment
A simple warming drink for Qi and Blood
One traditional combination often used as a warm daily drink:
Include
Red dates and longan — nourish Qi and Blood
Mulberries — nourish kidney and benefit uterus
Rose — soothes the Liver and promotes smooth Qi flow
Reduce
Iced drinks and cold food
Refined sugar and processed food
Dairy in excess
Consistently staying up past midnight
For those who enjoy TCM self-care, gently massaging these three acupoints for 3 to 5 minutes in a circular motion, 2 to 3 times a day, can support circulation and overall wellbeing.

Before you change your skincare again.
It is worth asking one question: has anyone actually looked at what is happening inside?
That is where we start at Xin Le TCM in Mont Kiara, KL. Not with what you are putting on your face, but with what your body is doing underneath it. When the internal picture improves, the skin follows. That is not a theory. It is what we see consistently in practice.
If your menstrual cycle is also irregular or you have other signs of internal imbalance, those are worth addressing too. Most skin concerns in women do not exist in isolation. You may find our post on PCOS and PMOS or our post on fertility and menstrual health relevant.
