Do You Have a Phlegm-Dampness Body Type?

What is Phlegm-Dampness?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), dampness refers to excessive moisture or fluid accumulation in the body. When this stagnates and thickens, it transforms into phlegm. This condition, known as phlegm-dampness, can be categorized into:

  • Visible Phlegm – The mucus you cough up or that irritates your throat.
  • Invisible Phlegm – An internal imbalance where body fluids fail to circulate properly, often accumulating in the digestive system and disrupting overall metabolism.

Common Symptoms of Phlegm-Dampness Body Type

If you have a phlegm-dampness constitution, you may experience:
✅ Oily skin
✅ Swelling, especially in the face and limbs
✅ Weight gain
✅ Digestive issues (poor digestion, bloating)
✅ Excessive and sticky sweat
✅ Feeling heavy, sluggish, and lethargic
✅ Frequent phlegm in the throat
✅ Thick, white, greasy tongue coating

The Spleen’s Role in Phlegm-Dampness

In TCM, the spleen governs the transportation of water and the transformation of food into nutrients, distributing them throughout the body. When the spleen is in a deficient state, it can’t regulate and distribute body fluids properly, leading to phlegm-dampness. This accumulation obstructs Qi flow and disrupts the body's energy circulation, causing various symptoms and illnesses.

What Causes Phlegm-Dampness?

Living in a Damp Environment – High humidity, frequent exposure to water, or sitting on damp surfaces can lead to dampness accumulation in the body.
Poor Diet – Consuming excess dairy, fried, greasy, or cold/raw foods can weaken the spleen, leading to poor digestion and fluid retention.
Emotional Stress – Overthinking, anxiety, and worry directly impact spleen function, further weakening digestion and fluid metabolism.

Phlegm-Dampness and Health Risks

People with this body type are at higher risk of:
⚠️ Obesity
⚠️ High cholesterol
⚠️ Hypertension
⚠️ Diabetes
⚠️ Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
⚠️ Coronary Heart Disease

If you often feel sluggish, bloated, or notice excess phlegm, you may have a phlegm-dampness body type. The good news? With the right diet, lifestyle, and TCM support, you can restore balance.
